Allen Iverson Celebrity Summer Classic 2007 |
For nine years, Allen Iverson has brought his celebrity friends together to raise money for his charities and provide family entertainment to our communities. And the summer of 2007 was no exception. In addition to youth camps and rallys in Atlanta, Norfolk, and Omaha, Allen returned to Prince Geoge's Stadium outside our nation's capital for his annual celebrity softball game followed by a celebrity football exhibition the next weekend in Norfolk, Virginia. Granted, only those that attend the events would really understand the magnitude of celebrities that show up to play in these charity events. This year the Allen Iverson Celebrity Summer Classic featured Grammy Award-winning artist Patti Labelle singing her soulful rendition of the national anthem. Other notable celebs including LaLa from MTV, Vivica A. Fox, Carmelo Anthony (Nuggets), Rip Hamilton (Wizards), Nate Burleson (Seahawks), Elton Brown (Cardinals), world boxing champion Floyd Mayweather, and local radio favorite, Big Tigger, from WPGC 95.5. The event is managed by Crossover Promotions, whose president and CEO has managed Iverson's business ventures since Iverson was drafted into the NBA. Originally started in 1998 as a way to raise money for the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Hampton Roads, VA, also Iverson's hometown, the event has expanded and now raises money for student-athletes to go to college as well as his Crossover Foundation, which addresses the health, education, and social issues affecting today's youth. Following an exciting weekend in our nation's capital, Allen Iverson traveled to Norfolk, Virginia, the following weekend for a midsummer night spectacle that few others could pull off. This year's events at Booker T. High School included a football clinic for 160 youth, where U.S. Rep Robert C. Scott and Hampton University defensive coordinator and NFL vet Jerry Holms were among thsoe who spoke to camp participants earlier that day. Iverson's teammates included Cardinals lineman Elton Brown, St. Louis Rams receiver Marques Hagans, rapper Fam-Lay, and several area college standouts. The opponents were the DeAngelo Hall all-stars featuring Atlanta Falcons defensive back Haa, New York Giants' Jonathan Hall, Pusha-T from the rap group Clipse, among others. Iverson also handed out some serious money as he announced a donation of $100,000 in scholarships to historically back colleges in North Carolina and Maryland. |
